People have experienced varying levels of hardship and distress, both emotionally and financially since the Covid-19 outbreak began and with the added pressure of Christmas just around the corner, it is time to help out where you can.

Someone summed it up wonderfully when they said: “We are all in the same storm, but some of us are in different boats.”

Every aspect of our lives has been touched in some way by both lockdowns and foodbanks are now looking for extra Christmas donations.

The good news is that we can all do something to help and bring some festive cheer to another person or family.

How You Can Help?

Some of the essential, everyday goods that are most popular with food banks are:

  • Tinned soup, fruit and vegetables.
  • Pasta, rice, and sauces.
  • Cereals.
  • Long-life products.
  • Tea, coffee, cordial, and biscuits.

Why not add in some mince pies, packs of stuffing or cranberry sauce?

Non-Food Items

Naturally, we all think to donate food to a food bank, but toiletries and hygiene products are also extremely important, these can include:

  • Deodorant, toilet roll, shower gel, shampoo, hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste.
  • Washing up liquid, laundry liquid detergent or washing powder.
  • Sanitary towels and tampons.
  • Nappies, baby wipes and baby food.

Most recently face masks and hand sanitiser are also essential.

The smallest donations can add up when people pull together to help their neighbours and their community.

Many food bank websites have regularly updated sections asking for specific items if they are running low. So, it is worth visiting their sites and seeing what is most needed.

Certain products should ideally be avoided, including dairy, dented tins, perishable items like fresh fruit, and homemade cooking or baking.

It’s not just donations of food that are welcomed, food banks also need financial support to keep their operation running.

So, another way of helping could be to make a monetary donation.

FareShare and the Trussell Trust are currently running a prize draw to WIN an exclusive pair of Marcus Rashford MBE signed football boots. To be in with a chance, tickets cost £3 per entry and all money raised goes straight to the charities.

This is about more than football boots; it’s about supporting the fight against hunger in the UK. Marcus’ campaigning throughout this year has seen incredible compassion and concern for people facing hunger. He not only raised crucial funds to support FareShare and the Trussell Trust but sparked a vital national conversation about people struggling to afford the basics we all take for granted but also pushed the government to make changes to help protect thousands of children from facing hunger this winter.

Our eldest has always been a big fan of Marcus and this year it made him even more special to the Butler Residential team, he really is an inspiration.

All money raised will be split between FareShare (who take good quality surplus food from the food industry and get it to almost 11,000 charities and community groups) and the Trussell Trust (who support a network of food banks across the UK, providing emergency food and essentials)

With more people expected to need to use food banks and community charities this winter, your support has never been more needed.
